Train Go Sorry or 30 Minutes a Day to a Healthy Heart

Train Go Sorry: Inside a Deaf World

Author: Leah Hager Cohen

This portrait of New York's Lafayette School for the Deaf is not just a work of journalism. It is also a memoir, since Leah Hager Cohen grew up on the school's campus and her father is its superintendent. As a hearing person raised among the deaf, Cohen appreciates both the intimate textures of that silent world and the gulf that separates it from our own.

Publishers Weekly

Combining memoir and reportage, Cohen provides a sensitive, intimate portrait of a New York City school for the deaf and the issues facing the deaf community. Cohen is not deaf, but her father heads the Lexington School, and she grew up there. She tracks the progress of two students: Sofia, a Russian immigrant bravely learning a second sign language and a new American world; and ghetto-raised James, who finds stability after moving into the school dormitory. Cohen analyzes the fierce debates over mainstreaming the deaf, the value of oralism and whether new cochlear implants rob the deaf of their culture. She tenderly recalls her deaf grandparents, probes her father's dilemmas, reports on her frustrated romance with a deaf man and her work as an interpreter in a program for deaf adults at the City University of New York. She portrays sign language with wonderfully tactile prose--the word ``silence,'' for example, is signed with ``austere arcs.'' If Cohen's narrative is disjointed, her commitment and her descriptive gifts make her book memorable. (Feb.)

Library Journal

The history of the Lexington School for the Deaf, the oldest school of its kind in the nation, comes alive with Cohen's vivid descriptions of its students and administrators. The author, who grew up at the school, follows the real-life events of Sofia, a Russian immigrant, and James, a member of a poor family in the Bronx, as well as members of her own family both past and present who are intimately associated with the school. Cohen takes special pride in representing the views of the deaf community--which are sometimes strongly divided--in such issues as American Sign Language (ASL) vs. oralism, hearing aids vs. cochlear implants, and mainstreaming vs. special education. The author's lively narrative includes numerous conversations translated from ASL. This is a one-of-a-kind book for both young and old readers. Essential for special education collections.-- Arla Lindgren, St. John's Univ., New York

School Library Journal

YA-Cohen draws upon her experiences as the hearing grandchild of deaf immigrants to combine personal stories of hearing-impaired individuals with related aspects of deaf culture. Using her first home and her father's place of employment, the Lexington School for the Deaf in New York City, to connect characters and experiences, she shares tales of activities familiar to young adults-boring classes, the school play, selling ads for the yearbook, graduation. The only difference for these students is that they cannot hear and cannot speak the language of the hearing world. Through Cohen, readers share in the challenges, frustrations, fears, triumphs, and joys of achievement not only of these young people, but, through historical vignettes, of her grandparents as well. This perspective allows readers to determine how (or if) life has changed for the deaf in America. A careful reading of Train Go Sorry provides exposure to the urban poor and our country's many immigrants (both past and present), making this a resource suitable for sociology or history students interested in viewing the American melting pot through the eyes of a group of people with a silent past.- Janis Ansell, Tidewater Association Hearing Impaired Children (TAHIC), Virginia Beach, VA

BookList

Leah Hager Cohen personalizes the issues facing the deaf culture by introducing their impact on her own family and the community of the Queens, New York City Lexington School for the Deaf. The characterizations of her hearing father, current superintendent of Lexington, and of her grandfather, a former student, are masterly. Throughout the book, Cohen focuses on two students whose Russian and African American roots exemplify the school's increasingly diverse population. Presenting both sides of such debates as using American Sign Language in the classroom and cochlear implants for children, Cohen truly involves readers in the problems of those she portrays. Her discussions support the existence of special schools for this group to provide for its members' particular communication and social needs. Well organized and beautifully written.

Depression and Bipolar Disorders or Health Through Balance

Depression and Bipolar Disorders: Everything You Need to Know

Author: Virginia Edwards

Depression is a deceptively common illness. At some point in their lives, one out of every five people will struggle with bouts of depression, and nearly twice as many women will be affected as men.

At the outset, depression can seem quite similar to the sadness or low moods that we all feel from time to time. As the illness progresses, however, work life, social life and intimate relationships all suffer. The affected person loses interest in those around him, feels exhausted and hopeless and often considers "giving up."

In Depression and Bipolar Disorders, Dr. Virginia Edwards explores the causes, symptoms and treatment of depressions. Topics include:

  • normal versus abnormal depression
  • unipolar depressive disorders
  • bipolar depressive disorders
  • biological and psychosocial therapies
  • depression in women and the elderly
  • treatment options, including involuntary hospitalization
  • suicide.

This comprehensive examination of depression also features case studies and an extensive resource list.

Health Through Balance: An Introduction to Tibetan Medicine

Author: Yeshi Donden

The best work on Tibetan medicine ever to appear in English.--Dr. Barry Clark

Publishers Weekly

Donden, the Dalai Lama's personal physician for some 20 years, fled to India during the 1959 Chinese invasion of his homeland and founded the Tibetan Medical Center at Dharmsala. There, and in private practice, he has built a reputation for successfully treating Indians of all ranks with a holistic system of medicine derived from ancient Buddhist principles. Although that system, detailed in these accessible Univ. of Virginia lectures, emphasizes the integrative treatment certain Western physicians are rediscovering, its tenets on the preordained spiritual aspects of disease remain foreign to our culture. Nonetheless, Donden intriguingly fits together parts of the complex puzzle called health. (July)

Stories of Sickness

Author: Howard Brody

Our personalities and our identities are intimately bound up with the stories that we tell to organize and to make sense of our lives. To understand the human meaning of illness, we therefore must turn to the stories we tell about illness, suffering, and medical care. Stories of Sickness explores the many dimensions of what illness means to the sufferers and to those around them, drawing on depictions of illness in great works of literature and in non-fiction accounts. The exploration is primarily philosophical but incorporates approaches from literature and from the medical social sciences. When it was first published in 1987, Stories of Sickness helped to inaugurate a renewed interest in the importance of narrative studies in health care. For the Second Edition the text has been thoroughly revised and significantly expanded. Four almost entirely new chapters have been added on the nature, complexities, and rigor of narrative ethics and how it is carried out. There is also an additional chapter on maladaptive ways of being sick that deals in greater depth with disability issues. Health care professionals, students of medicine and bioethics, and ordinary people coping with illness, no less than scholars in the health care humanities and social sciences, will find much of value in this volume.
Unique Features:
*Philosophically sophisticated yet clearly written and easily accessible
*Interdisciplinary approach--combines philosophy, literature, health care, social sciences
*Contains many fascinating stories and vignettes of illness drawn from both fiction and nonfiction
*A new and comprehensive overview of the "hot topic" of narrative ethics in medicineand health care

30 Minute Fitness Solution or Coping with Depression in Young People

30-Minute Fitness Solution: A Four-Step Plan for Women of All Ages

Author: JoAnn E Manson

Just 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise—even walking—can save your life. This is the powerful message that Dr. JoAnn Manson—of the lead investigators of both the Women's Health Initiative and the Nurses' Health Study—and her coauthor Patricia Amend want to send to American women.

Regardless of the barriers you may face—too busy, too tired, too "down," or too old—with this four-step practical plan you'll find the excuses falling away and a happier, healthier self emerging. This book offers not only state-of-the-art information from recent medical research but step-by-step instructions on how to get started and maintain a physically active lifestyle. The authors will help you choose a "core" activity that doesn't disrupt your daily life. Then they will show you how to measure your fitness level at the start, how to monitor your progress over time, and how to reward yourself for your efforts. These four simple steps to fitness will work no matter who you are—25 or 75, harried mother or overworked professional (or both), in good health or living with a chronic disease.

The authors have included a clearly illustrated program of stretching and strength-training exercises; sensible activities for women with health concerns; an intelligent weight-loss plan; guidelines for selecting home exercise equipment and choosing a health club; and much more. With over 100 illustrations, questionnaires, and checklists, this book has everything you need to feel good, look better, and live longer, starting today—it's all just 30 minutes away.

Library Journal

Although studies have shown that just 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days of the week and two strength-training sessions per week provide both physical and psychological benefits, many women do not make time to exercise. Here, Manson, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Amend, a fitness writer, present four steps that even the busiest women can follow to make exercise an enjoyable, daily habit: "Plan Your Active Lifestyle," "Proceed with Your Exercise Program," "Record Your Progress," and "Reward Your Efforts." An inspirational quote begins each chapter, and there are many boxes/sidebars featuring questionnaires, record-keeping logs, and other helpful information throughout. "Points To Remember" sections close each chapter. One hopes that the drawings accompanying the sample strength-training workouts will be reviewed and corrected in the finished copy (for example, one depicts a woman stepping up onto a folding chair even though the written instructions specify an adjustable step or bench). Although well written and straightforward, this book doesn't break any new ground. An optional choice for larger collections. Samantha J. Gust, Niagara Univ. Supportive Care for the Renal Patient or Breast Cancer

Supportive Care for the Renal Patient(Supportive Care Series)

Author: E Joanna Chambers

This book provides a comprehensive, evidence-based overview of supportive care for the nephrology patient. An international group of contributors emphasize the continuum of palliative care from the time of diagnosis through to end-of-life care and the issues surrounding withdrawal of dialysis. The book addresses the psychological impact of the disease, the importance of involving the patient in making decisions about their care, ethical considerations, the role of the family and the multidisciplinary team.
This book will be of particular interest to palliative medicine and pain consultants; nephrologists; who increasingly need to know more about palliative care; nurse practitioners; dialysis nurses, social workers, dieticians, and psychiatric consultants.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Mony Fraer, MD (University of Kentucky College of Medicine)
Description: This book appears to be the first to address not only chronic kidney disease, but also the patient as a whole and as a person with a final goal of improving quality of life. It also emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary team approach in order to achieve this goal.
Purpose: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) suffer from depression, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, and chronic pain, problems that are usually perceived as secondary by the caretakers. This book addresses these problems comprehensively.
Audience: This book is written for nephrologists, nurses, and social workers who take care of CKD patients. The social workers will find useful the chapters on palliative care programs, advanced directives and advance care planning, and support of the home dialysis patients.
Features: Many subjects covered in this book are not formally taught to nephrologists, including initiation and withdrawal of dialysis, end of life care, the time-limited trial of dialysis, evaluation of a request to stop dialysis, and the palliative care option. A special emphasis is placed on the spiritual care and the psychological aspects of renal disease. The chapters are constructed around case scenarios, making the reading more interesting and providing a connection with the problems encountered in real life. Out of all the excellent tables in the book, the ones that I found very helpful were: "Guidelines for the care of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who are in the last days of life in hospital" and the ones that outline the management of dialysis and ESRD-related symptoms.
Assessment: This is a valuable and useful book. It addresses topics not formally taught and often neglected in the nephrology community. The authors are experts in the field. I initially misjudged the book by an apparently unappealing title, but I found it to be extremely interesting and useful. I think it should be included in the core curriculum of every nephrology program.

Breast Cancer

Author: Michael Baum

The new edition of this popular guide has been updated to include many innovative developments in the primary and secondary prevention of breast cancer. New surgical techniques are described together with the promising results of adjuvant systemic therapy trials, which have demonstrated prolonged survival rates in patients treated during early stages of the disease. New biological insights into the nature of breast cancer are also described. The book retains its relatively simple style and is an ideal resource for patients and their families.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Melody L McKinney, DNS, RN (Indiana State University)
Description: As the care management of breast cancer patients is being assumed more often by general practitioners, and patients are taking a more active role, easily accessible high-quality informational resources are needed to facilitate decision-making. This third edition handbook of "fast facts" on breast cancer contains practical advice on topics such as cancer risk education, diagnosis and treatment of primary cancer, rehabilitation, and care of patients with advanced disease. Written by two world experts on breast cancer, this expanded and updated edition also includes information on breast cancer genetics, hormone replacement therapy, and findings from recent major clinical trials.
Purpose: According to the authors, the book is designed to provide cancer care practitioners rapid access to information for helping patients sort out the "facts" from "fancies and fallacies" when weighing the risks and benefits of various treatment options.
Audience: The targeted audience is cancer care clinicians, including clinical nurse specialists.
Features: The book includes a brief introduction and seven chapters addressing a broad range of issues related to cancer epidemiology, perception of risk, pathophysiology, diagnosis, primary tumor control, adjuvant therapy, HRT, follow-up and rehabilitation, management of advanced cancer, clinical trials, and future trends. Numerous colorful tables and figures enhance the presentation of content. Each chapter ends with highlighted lists of key points and references. An index and a page of useful addresses for resources in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia are also provided.
Assessment: This well-referenced, well-indexed handbook provides succinct, current, and practical information on breast cancer and its management. The expertise of two world authorities on breast cancer is used to achieve the goal of presenting cutting-edge information related to advances in the understanding of cancer, its causes and treatment. The content is broad in scope, pertinent, and well-written and should achieve the authors' goal of providing rapid access to information that will facilitate the complex task of interpreting new data and treatments as clinicians guide patients in weighing the risks and benefits of various treatment options and making informed decisions.

Tibetan Medicinal Plants or Introduction to Toxicology and Food

Tibetan Medicinal Plants

Author: Christa Kletter

The main part of this volume encompasses 60 monographs, each having a Tibetan plant name as its title. This collection provides a comprehensive overview of all plant types, thus making it easier for the reader to grasp the Tibetan concept. Each monograph consists of several chapters. These chapters address different topics related either to the Tibetan or the Western approach. Most of the monographs contain a description of the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the used plant parts, and anatomical features of 76 plants are provided. Each monograph contains a chapter in which an overview of the known chemical constituents and pharmacological properties of each plant is given as well as a chapter on their use in Tibetan medicine. In contrast to other publications on Tibetan medicine, where translations of the Tibetan terms are given in other languages, this book treats the Tibetan word as a technical term, keeps the Tibetan term and tries to explain its meaning. This treatment lessens confusion byreducing the number of translations with which the reader has to deal.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Michael Gabay, PharmD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy)
Description: This is an in-depth review of 59 plants used by practitioners of Tibetan medicine. The book is written from a scientific, but yet very Eastern medicinal, perspective. Highlights of the book include color illustrations of the various plants and a glossary of Tibetan medical terms. The glossary is very useful for understanding the purposes of these plants in treating or preventing diseases.
Purpose: The main purpose is to contribute to the existing knowledge of Tibetan medicinal plants and the preservation of traditional Tibetan medicine, through both traditional Tibetan and Western approaches to medicine. Since there is little published data available about Tibetan medicinal plants in such a format, I believe the objectives are worthy. The authors meet the objectives, but it seems to me that there is a tendency to accentuate the Tibetan medicinal approach throughout the book. The combination of both approaches is difficult to do as mentioned by the authors.
Audience: It is hard to pinpoint a specific audience for this book beyond those who work specifically with Tibetan medicinal plants in practice or researchers who may wish to know about the chemistry and pharmacology of these plants. The authors seem to be quite credible.
Features: The Tibetan medicinal herbs are covered in a monograph format. Sections within each monograph include plant classification, distribution, chemistry, pharmacology, and use in Tibetan medicine. The authors have obviously done a great deal of background research to find references for the information contained in the book. Most of the references would be unretrievable for most researchers, however. The information is very scientific and descriptions of the use in Tibetan medicine of the plants forces the Western medicine practitioner to consistently refer to the glossary for definitions of disease states. No mentions are made of interactions with prescription medications or possible safety concerns regarding use. Most of the Tibetan medicinal plants lack any solid clinical data for efficacy or safety.
Assessment: This book is needed. In general, very little information is available regarding Tibetan medicinal plants even in contemporary natural product books. The book does give researchers and practitioners basic scientific information about each plant and the basis for their use in Tibetan medicine, but does not relate well how these uses fit into Western medicine applications. For general healthcare practitioners, this book probably would not be that useful. Information is not applicable to most practice settings, is not patient-focused, and contains little to no efficacy and safety data regarding these plants. However, I don't believe these were specifically the goals of the authors.

Booknews

Tibetan doctors and Austrian researchers in botany and pharmacognosy report the findings of a study sparked to document plants used in Tibetan medicine. After reviewing Tibetan medicine and the habitats of Tibetan medicinal plants, they detail 60 plants or groups of plants with information on the Tibetan plant classification, botanical findings, plant material, description, distribution, ecology, taxonomy, variability, conservation. Then they consider the macroscopic and microscopic characters, chemistry, and pharmacology of the drug derived from the plant. Included are 77 pages of color plates, and a glossary of Tibetan medical terms. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Sports Nutrition or Carbohydrate Addicts Program for Success

Sports Nutrition

Author: Maughan

Sports Nutrition, which focuses on the importance of proper nutritional preparation for athletes, provides a practical supplement to Nutrition in Sport. It provides an essential reference on all aspects of sports nutrition for the team coach, athletic trainer, physical therapist and allied health-related professional working with athletes and sports teams, and the knowledgeable athlete.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Kristine N Clark, MS, RCEP (North Carolina State)
Description: This handbook provides a condensed review of the impact of nutrition on physical performance. The information is complemented by expert commentary on important questions/topics as well as case studies of various athletes.
Purpose: This book is intended to provide an up-to-date handbook on sports nutrition for coaches, sports professionals, and athletes. Coaches and athletes alike continue to look for strategies to create an edge over other athletes. The market of supplements and ergogenic aids continues to grow. This book focuses on sound nutrition strategies, based on the research, to enhance an athlete's physical performance.
Audience: Although the tone of the book indicates it is directed toward an audience working with athletes, such as coaches, trainers, and dieticians, it is written at a level that would be appropriate for the athletes themselves. However, the expert commentary is written at a level more appropriate for the professionals working with athletes.
Features: This book covers three main areas: preparing the athlete for competition, nutrition for the athlete during competition, and practical recommendations for appropriate eating strategies in various situations. The case studies, relating to topics throughout the book, provide a practical example of athletes seeking professional advice on how to improve their diet to improve their performance. The expert comments provide more detailed information on specific topics relating to the chapter, but most of the information in these comments would have been more appropriate and useful within the chapter itself.
Assessment: This book is a great resource for anyone working with athletes. It is a quick reference for a summary of the latest research in the area of sports nutrition and it provides practical recommendations for the sports professional working with athletes. The greatest strength of this book lies in the one or two case studies that accompany almost every chapter.

Your Father Has Alzheimers or Anti Fat Nutrients

Your Father Has Alzheimer's: A Guide to Baby Boomers in Dealing with Our Aging Parents

Author: Miles Friedman

If yours is among the one in three American families that have been struck by Alzheimer’s, then this book is for you. This is not a medical or technical book. It is a layman’s guide to Alzheimer’s, and illustrates the progression of the disease, the issues that must be addressed, and some of the options for dealing with those issues. It is also a loving reminiscence about the life of the author’s father and about their relationship. This book may help the reader reconcile the need to remember the past with the need to confront the present and future challenges posed by Alzheimer’s and by other forms of dementia in the aged. Whether dealing with Alzheimer’s, or another diagnosis, you are undoubtedly facing many of the same decisions about housing, finances, legal matters, and personal care. Share the author’s experiences and learn how one family coped with their father’s driving, money management, medical care, and evolving personal relationships.

Anti-Fat Nutrients

Author: Dallas Clouatr

A successful diet does much more than simply take off unwanted pounds -- it helps you feel good and look good. And it is permanent. This is because it includes making changes in body composition and metabolism that increase the body's ability to burn calories. These changes do not depend upon a large reduction in the calories consumed, but upon minor modifications in the foods eaten and upon the addition of a small number of supplements to the diet. The result is a decrease in fatty tissue and an increase in the ratio of lean muscle tissue to adipose (fat) tissue in the body. Such a change is psychologically satisfying because lean tissue not only burns calories, but also gives women their shapely figures and men their muscle tone. In any successful weight-loss program, you should be able to judge yourself by your mirror rather than by your bathroom scale! Anti-Fat Nutrients provides do-it-yourself alternatives to empower dieters to achieve their ideal weight on their own.

Dying with Jesus: Meditations for Those Who Are Terminally Ill, Their Families and Their Caregivers

Author: Angela M Hibbard

Dying with Jesus is for people who are dying and for their caregivers, whether family members or pastoral-care professionals. Each page contains a Scripture passage with a brief commentary, a meditation intended to capture the thoughts and feelings of the dying person, and a response from Jesus. The booklet can be used as a single extended meditation or it can be read a page at a time in any sequence that is helpful. Page headings indicate the theme found in the meditation and can guide the user to the appropriate page for a given moment.

The meditations, rooted in the experience of dying people, may help to identify and give words to many painful thoughts and feelings. By reading a given meditation together chaplains, family members, or the dying person may be able to initiate a difficult but necessary conversation. It is hoped that Dying with Jesus will reveal some of Jesus' human struggle and will make it accessible to all who are facing the same frightening reality. All who use it are especially encouraged to share the feelings and memories it calls forth. This gift of shared experience will enlighten those who accompany the dying and will create a bridge between the gospel story and those of us who hear it today.

Quien Dijo Que No Se Puede?

Author: Maria Antonieta Collins

Although her struggle and final victory over obesity along with the recipes that helped her conquer it dominated Dietas y Recetas de Maria Antonieta, this new blend of anecdotes, tips, and more recipes focuses on those who, inspired by Collins, are waging their own battle against obesity. As was her own daughter Adriana.

Patricia Arancibia, "Criticas" Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information. - Criticas

After the success of her first title, Dietas y recetas de Maria Antonieta (Maria Antonieta's Diets and Recipes, Criticas, Jan./Feb. 2002), Mexico's Univision anchor Collins has published a follow-up. Although her struggle and final victory over obesity along with the recipes that helped her conquer it dominated Dietas, this new blend of anecdotes, tips, and more recipes focuses on those who, inspired by Collins, are waging their own battle against obesity. A year after appearing on Cristina Salaregui's popular TV show where she vowed to overcome her weight problems, Collins's obese daughter, Adrianna, has become an even more striking success story than her mother. Adrianna accompanies Collins on tours to promote Dietas, and has written a couple of chapters for the new book. The testimonials, along with frank confessions of setbacks, are the book's greatest strengths. Encouraging as this is, though, the rest of the book repeats information from Dietas. Once again, such Univision stars as Saralegui, who wrote the prolog, Jorge Santos, and Lily Estefan reveal their dieting secrets, and Collins recycles Dietas's tips and advice. Moreover, the book seems to have been written and released too quickly, before it could be revised and reorganized. But despite these drawbacks, Collins's kindness, directness, and sympathy make this a worthwhile read. The new book, at least, gives measurement units in pounds and feet, with their metric equivalents in parentheses-a big improvement over Dietas. Bookstores and public libraries will find many of Collins's fans among their patrons.

Medline or Fitness for Life

Medline: A guide to effective searching in PubMed and other Interfaces

Author: Brian S Katcher

This concise and clearly written book will make your PubMed searches more productive.

MEDLINE, the National Library of Medicine's on-line bibliographic database, is the premiere index to the world's biomedical literature. It is the primary component of PubMed. MEDLINE is exquisitely organized: each journal article is manually indexed under an average of a dozen Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), one or more publication types, and more. An understanding of this organization is essential to effective searching. Any health professional, health sciences student, or researcher will benefit from reading this book. It explains the basics of formulating searches, shows how to put the main indexing elements in MEDLINE to best use, illustrates the importance of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), provides guidance for framing questions, and backs everything up with practical examples.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Marcia Klinger Henry, MLS(California State University, Northridge)
Description: This is the second edition of a favorably reviewed book that was first published in 1999. The author has updated his examples as well as appendix A, Medline Interfaces and the World Wide Web.
Purpose: The author wants readers to understand how Medline works and offers advice on possible search strategies. In this age of information literacy and teaching critical thinking skills, he understands well how to encourage his readers to practice what is possible and to use critical thinking.
Audience: Although the author does not specify an intended audience, he assumes readers have a reprint file and access to bibliographic management software. Thus, I believe he is writing for researchers in the health sciences. The book is also useful for librarians and students in both information science and the health sciences.
Features: The book emphasizes Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), explains the fields of a full Medline record, and describes how to use publication types and text words in formulating a search strategy. The author's unique style of including the MeSH subject headings along with the citation at the end of each chapter helps to reinforce the message of how Medline views articles. In the 98 pages comprising the body of the book, PubMed is mentioned about two-thirds of the time, while the Ovid interface barely one-ninth of the time. Most other interfaces are not discussed.
Assessment: The author's clear writing style contributes greatly to the book's success, but other books such as David Hutchinson's Medlinefor Health Professionals: How to Search PubMed on the Internet (New Wind Publishing, 1998) have been more direct in addressing the audience and the interface. However, librarians who already know about Medline and the structure of MeSH can benefit from this author's style and enthusiasm. If your library does not own the first edition, I recommend buying this latest edition.

Beyond the Food Game or Uncooked

Beyond the Food Game: A Spiritual and Psychological Approach to Healing Emotional Eating

Author: Jane E Latimer

With practical step-by-step instructions, illustration and easy-to-follow charts, "Beyond The Food Game" helps readers recognize and repair childhood 'injuries' that underlie emotional eating.

Interesting book: Organizational Learning and the Learning Organization or Company Officer Promotional Case Studies

Uncooked

Author: Lyndsay Mikanowski

Organic products have never been hotter, and, in step with that trend, Uncooked is a celebration of the art of raw cuisine. If eating raw means a more balanced and nutritious diet, it also requires the knowledge of how to choose the right ingredients and how to prepare them. Lyndsay and Patrick Mikanowski bring together recipes that have inspired them on their travels and introduce raw dishes from across the globe: Californian vegetables, Japanese sushi, and lemon-marinated meat from Polynesia are just a few of the tantalizing dishes. These two epicureans reveal the history and culinary tradition of all types of raw cuisine, throughout the ages and across the continents.

The benefits of raw food preparation for health and fitness are explained with recipes that capitalize on the essence of the product's natural flavor or enhance it with spices, herbs, and oils. The authors offer suggestions for varying the dishes according to the season and your personal taste, as well as great wine matches for each dish.

The book's fresh and modern design comes alive with Grant Symon's flawless photographs of the 100 dishes for fruit, vegetables, fish, and meat that are

as pleasing to the eye as they are to the tastebuds. From quick and easy recipes to more sophisticated preparations, this volume is an initiation in tastes both simple and refined. The possibilites—and delights—of raw cuisine are countless.

Featured ingredients: tomato, mushroom, white truffle, arugula, purple basil, beef, mango, salmon, tuna, scallop, caviar, passion fruit, banana, foie gras, olive, crab, fig, Spanish ham, etc.

Uncooked strips gastronomy down to its essentials to revealthe secret of healthy and tasty food in a cookbook that is as beautiful as it is informative.

Publishers Weekly

A shiny, high-flying contribution to the rather earthbound raw foods movement, this volume doesn t shy away from luxurious ingredients and glamorous presentations. Sensibly for a raw foods cookbook, the focus is primarily on traditional raw dishes like carpaccios, ceviches and salads comprised of thinly sliced vegetables and fruits. Some of these recipes, like Creamed Avocado with Osetra Caviar, are tasty; others, like a cold Strawberry, Pineapple, and Tomato Minestrone could put a less hardy soul off her lunch. Visually, this volume resembles a coffee-table book rather than something to dirty up in the kitchen and it reads like one, too. Dishes are organized not by some logical division like breakfasts and desserts, but less usefully by main ingredient: pineapple, foie gras, duck and so on. Further, the book is so over-designed that sometimes lists of ingredients are nowhere near the instructions for what to do with them. The best offerings in this volume are the brief histories of certain foodstuffs (who knew that the word apple was once used to designate the edible fruit of any tree ?) But a reader interested in such novelties could probably find them in a book unburdened by a hefty price tag and pages of sometimes bizarre recipes. 275 color illustrations. (Apr.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Originally published in France, this lavish, oversized book by the Mikanowskis (Tomate; Potate) centers on the benefits of eating raw foods. With its sophisticated design and striking color photographs on every page, it is more reminiscent of a European design magazine than the standard health-food cookbook. Patrick, in fact, has been an art director; Lyndsay is a landscape designer. She wrote the text, which ranges over topics from culinary history to Claude Levi-Strauss's works to kitchen hygiene, and he developed the recipes, elaborate creations like Carpaccio of Sea Bass, Kiwi Fruit, Bottarga, and Lime. Most readers are more likely to enjoy browsing through this unusual book than actually cooking with it, though raw-food chefs could find it inspiring. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Speak the Language of Healing: A New Approach to Breast Cancer

Author: Susan Kuner

Drawn together by their dismay over the medical establishment's approach to the healing process, four women offer a new way of viewing the five stages of illness using a language of relationship, spirit and integration.

Publishers Weekly

Rejecting the pervasive medical view of cancer treatment as a "war" against illness, four women with breast cancer offer holistic perspectives on the processes of treatment, healing and renewal. Drawing on their diverse spiritual backgrounds (Orsborn is Jewish and a student of Eastern philosophy; Kuner studied with a Sufi teacher; Quigley has undergone 12-Step programs; and Stroup is a Christian minister), the authors have crafted a framework that allows women to view their cancer as part of an encounter with their deepest selves. They postulate five stages through which "initiates" travel on the journey from fear to acceptance: impact, chaos, choices, community and spirit. As each author relates her experiences--such as confronting fears of death, pain and isolation, choosing between mainstream and alternative therapies and enduring the loss of hair, self-esteem, friends and, in once case a fianc --she suggests ways to counter the prevailing view of doctors and patients that patients who "fight back" stand the greatest chance of being healed, that survivors are "winners" and those who die have lost their "battles." Readers at any stage of breast cancer treatment will likely take comfort from the authors' spiritual emphasis. Agent, Linda Roghaar. (Oct.) FYI: A portion of the proceeds from the books sold will go to breast cancer research. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

Four friends diagnosed with breast cancer believe that the language of spiritual growth is more a complement to their lives than that of the battleground, the traditional words used when discussing cancer. Kuner is a meditation teacher and Sufi student; author Carol Matzkin Orsborn (Return from Exile: One Woman's Journey Back to Judaism) is Jewish; Linda Quigley is a journalist and follower of the 12-step path; and Rev. Dr. Karen Leigh Stroup is a Christian minister. The multivoiced reading by four professional narrators doesn't mince words about diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, recurrence, and death. Breaking down the cancer journey into five sections--impact, chaos, choices, community, and spirit--the authors wish to increase their connection to God (often referred to as She) through deepening humility. Women should "find their own path through illness as a spiritual initiation rather than a war." Their words and spirits will bolster any woman coming to the same crossroad in her life. Highly recommended.--Bette-Lee Fox, "Library Journal" Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

The Whey Prescription or Safe Estrogen

The Whey Prescription: The Healing Miracle in Milk

Author: Christopher Vasey

HEALTH / NUTRITION

Since antiquity whey has been known as “healing water” by Greek physicians. Hippocrates and Galen both recommended whey to their patients. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, spas across Europe offered the whey cure to aristocrats and commoners alike. Modern scientific research has confirmed the curative capabilities attributed by our ancestors to this dairy product, but because it is highly perishable and must be consumed while very fresh, this cure fell out of favor in our modern urban age. Now, thanks to the availability of whey powder, this highly nutritious and effective healing agent is once more within the reach of everyone.

Whey is the watery part of milk that is separated from the curd in the process of making cheese. It is rich in lactose, minerals, and vitamins. Beyond its nutritional value, whey has powerful detoxification properties and its therapeutic action is beneficial for the major organ centers of the body: heart, liver, kidneys, and intestines. It is especially effective in the treatment of liver ailments such as hepatitis as well as the treatment of skin problems, infections, edema, digestive disorders and gallstones, and the painful joint diseases of arthritis and rheumatism. Whey also has been shown to be a powerful treatment against obesity, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. In addition to its ability to treat these specific illnesses, whey is a proven invigorating supplement that promotes overall good health and vitality.

Christopher Vasey, N.D., is a naturopath specializing in detoxification and rejuvenation. He is the author of The Water Prescription and the bestsellingThe Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health. He lives near Montreux, Switzerland.
