Description: This book for patients infected with hepatitis C is part of the series, Your Personal Health. It contains an introduction, 10 chapters, a glossary, an index, and a resource guide.
Purpose: The authors have spent many years on the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of patients with hepatitis C. This book was written to help patients understand the current state of knowledge of hepatitis C and therefore be better be able to cope with the diagnosis. This is a worthy objective and it is well met.
Audience: The book is written specifically for the person newly diagnosed with hepatitis C. There is also a chapter for friends and family. The authors do a good job with clear explanations of a complex disease. They are certainly credible, with years of experience treating those with liver disease.
Features: The authors discuss hepatitis C in all of its aspects. They describe the virus, its effects on the body as a whole, and the liver in particular. Particularly clear are chapters describing the diagnosis of the disease as well as treatment options. The section on the side effects of treatment with interferon and ribavirin is especially good. The clinical vignettes are helpful.
Assessment: This is a useful book, written in plain language. This is no small feat when dealing with such a complex and often confusing disease. The authors describe the various aspects of hepatitis C infection with special emphasis on the emotional impact of this disease. They point out, and rightly so, that the individual with hepatitis C infection is best served by being well informed.
