New interesting book: Sallets Humbles and Shrewsbery Cakes or Quick and Easy Grilling

Fashion Classics: From Carlyle to Barthes

Author: Michael Carter

With so much focus on contemporary theory, it is easy to forget that the serious analysis of clothing and fashion has a long history. In fact, they have been the subject of intense cultural debate since the nineteenth century. Fashion Classics provides an interpretative overview of the groundbreaking and often idiosyncratic writings of eight theorists whose work has profoundly influenced the conceptual and theoretical basis of our contemporary understanding of clothes and the fashion system.

Carter fully revives early ‘fashion theorists’ – some canonical and others less well known – and examines them in light of more recent work. From Carlyle’s fantastical character Professor Teufelsdrockh, through the first Freudian analysis of clothes by J.C. Flugel, the pioneering work of Spencer, Veblen, Simmel, Kroeber, Laver and finally Barthes’ monumental work on the modern fashion system, this book explores and explains the foundations of fashion theory. Not only does it provide an historical outline of Western conceptions of clothes and fashion, but it also highlights how ideas intermix and build on one another.

Carter’s lively narrative clearly shows that views on fashion have always been impassioned – perhaps most notably Carlyle’s notorious attack on Dandyism and Veblen’s suggestion that clothes should be made out of old newspaper. This book also makes sense of complex theory and is essential reading for anyone seeking an overview of the history of fashion theory.

Keep Your Brain Young or Sober and Free

Keep Your Brain Young: The Complete Guide to Physical and Emotional Health and Longevity

Author: Guy M McKhann

Using the latest knowledge on how the brain ages to help us feel younger and healthier

In Keep Your Brain Young, two of the world's most prominent brain doctors explain all of the normal changes that can affect the brain as we age. While showing what we can do to minimize these changes and how to boost mental and physical functioning through our post-forty years. Soundly based on the authors' own breakthrough research, this pathbreaking guide discusses the latest techniques for maintaining memory, managing stress, and coping with age-related sleep disorders. The authors include prescriptive exercises that can be put into action right away. Keep Your Brain Young has been featured on the Today show, in Time magazine, and The Wall Street Journal.

Guy McKhann, MD (Baltimore, MD), is Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Director of the school's Zanvyl Krieger Mind/Brain Institute. Marilyn Albert, PhD (Boston, MA), is Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at Harvard Medical School. She is Director of the Gerontology Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and of the Harvard-Mahoney Neuroscience Institute at Harvard Medical School.

Publishers Weekly

McKhann, a professor of neurology at John Hopkins, has coauthored this manual on the workings of the brain with his wife, Albert, director of gerontology research at Massachusetts General Hospital. Although the writing is dry, there is excellent information here for the aging adult. The authors acknowledge that growing older quite naturally involves some physical changes in the brain. They present the most effective ways, based on scientific research and case histories, to minimize these changes and their impact on everyday life. Strategies are offered to improve memory, such as doing mental exercises and maintaining a regular exercise program. For the disease-free older adult, the authors recommend a well-balanced diet and getting an adequate amount of sleep. They stress the importance of recognizing and seeking medical assistance for depression, hearing or vision loss and urinary and sexual problems. McKhann and Albert also deal extensively with a variety of brain disorders including tumors, Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's, and detail the latest medical treatments and drugs that may ameliorate some of these conditions. Sober and Free: Making Your Recovery Work for You

Author: Guy Kettelhack

Achieving sobriety is a cause for celebration, but maintaining sobriety presents a new set of challenges. And while traditional methods work for many people, for others they simple do not. The voices presented here offer you new, and sometimes unusual, perspectives on how to maintain sobriety. From managing slips and relapses to relearning how to create significant relationships, Sober and Free stresses the importance of finding the way of maintaining sobriety that works best for your personality and lifestyle.

Library Journal

Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs have helped thousands recover from addictive behaviors. Yet these programs do not work for everyone. These two titles offer other choices. Moderate Drinking is the official handbook of Moderation Management (MM), a nonprofit organization founded in 1993 by Kishline for problem drinkers who want to cut back. This approach, although highly controversial in America, has already been successfully implemented abroad and is making strides in this country. Kishline skillfully argues against using the disease model for alcoholism and outlines her philosophy and goals. She carefully and specifically details who should not try her methods. Overall, this is a helpful book. Still other alternatives to conventional treatments are described in Sober and Free. Kettelhack, a gay recovering alcoholic and author of several works, including First Year Sobriety (HarperSanFrancisco, 1992), uses individual case histories to illustrate his argument that recovery is possible by many methods. According to the author, each person must find the way that works best for him/her. Moderate Drinking should be purchased by all public and alcohol studies libraries. If space and budgets permit, Sober and Free should also be included. Together, these books help balance the plethora of works on abstinence and conventional treatments.January Adams, Franklin Twp. Reviewer: Jane S. Roccaforte, MD (University of Nebraska Medical Center)
Description: This book for patients infected with hepatitis C is part of the series, Your Personal Health. It contains an introduction, 10 chapters, a glossary, an index, and a resource guide.
Purpose: The authors have spent many years on the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of patients with hepatitis C. This book was written to help patients understand the current state of knowledge of hepatitis C and therefore be better be able to cope with the diagnosis. This is a worthy objective and it is well met.
Audience: The book is written specifically for the person newly diagnosed with hepatitis C. There is also a chapter for friends and family. The authors do a good job with clear explanations of a complex disease. They are certainly credible, with years of experience treating those with liver disease.
Features: The authors discuss hepatitis C in all of its aspects. They describe the virus, its effects on the body as a whole, and the liver in particular. Particularly clear are chapters describing the diagnosis of the disease as well as treatment options. The section on the side effects of treatment with interferon and ribavirin is especially good. The clinical vignettes are helpful.
Assessment: This is a useful book, written in plain language. This is no small feat when dealing with such a complex and often confusing disease. The authors describe the various aspects of hepatitis C infection with special emphasis on the emotional impact of this disease. They point out, and rightly so, that the individual with hepatitis C infection is best served by being well informed.

Tibetan AyurVeda: Health Secrets from the Roof of the World

Author: Robert Sachs

Discover the four levels of traditional Tibetan healing science with this preventive health care manual for people of any age, culture, and physical type.

• Includes material on little-known therapies such as Pancha Karma and Kum Nye, as well as guidelines for nutrition, longevity, detoxification, and meditation.

• Author has studied with many of the best-known Tibetan and Ayurvedic physicians alive today.

Tibetan medicine was probably the first truly integrated system of ancient healing science. From the seventh to the tenth centuries, Tibetan kings encouraged physicians from India, China, Nepal, Persia, and Greece to teach their traditional medical sciences to Tibetan physicians, who at that time were primarily influenced by Ayurveda and shamanic healing modalities. This cross-cultural marriage of the greatest healing traditions makes Tibetan medicine ideally adaptable to Western health needs.

Tibetan Ayurveda provides a comprehensive guide to the four levels of traditional Tibetan medicine with a wealth of traditional health practices and teachings. Much of the contemporary material on Tibetan medicine focuses solely on herbal medicine and acupuncture; Tibetan Ayurveda goes beyond these to look at other important forms of treatment such as Pancha Karma for detoxification and rejuvenation and Kum Nye for integrating mind and body. A self-profile test is included to allow readers to determine their own health needs and embark on the path toward realizing their full potential for health and well-being.

Whole Life Times

I highly recommend this work for both lay persons and health practitioners alike who would like to expand their horizons and add to their knowledge of alternative therapies.

Deepak Chopra

Tibetan Ayurveda is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to live a life based on the wisdom of Ayurveda. I recommend it highly.

Muscular Dystrophy or Child and Adolescent Obesity

Muscular Dystrophy

Author: Alan E H Emery

The muscular dystrophies are a group of genetic diseases that severely affect children and adults. For sufferers and their family, the illness presents enormous physical and psychological challenges. Written specifically for people with muscular dystrophy and their families, this book answers many of the questions asked about how and why muscular dystrophy occurs, and how it will affect the life of a recently diagnosed child.

As well as presenting the reader with advice and an explanation of muscular dystrophy, the book also guides the reader towards further information on societies and support groups around the world, and reliable internet resources. It also contains a full glossary to aid the reader in their understanding of the disease.

The different types of muscular dystrophy are described throughout with a minimum of technical jargon. Questions relating to exercise, physiotherapy, surgery, and the emotional effects of the diseases are answered, and advice is given on the problems of schooling and choice of career.

Since publication of the first edition in 1994, the genes for almost all the different types of dystrophy have been identified, enabling prevention through genetic counselling, therefore relieving some of the worry for affected families. Drawn from his many years of experience treating patients, Professor Emery provides authoritative, yet compassionate advice for people living with this illness.

Child and Adolescent Obesity: Causes and Consequences, Prevention and Management

Author: Walter Burniat

This book addresses the ever-increasing problem of obesity in children and adolescents, the long-term health and social problems that arise from this, and approaches to prevention and management. It covers all aspects of obesity from epidemiology and prevention to recent developments in biochemistry and genetics, and to the varied approaches to management which are influenced by social and clinical need. A foreword by William Dietz and a forward looking "future perspectives" conclusion by Philip James embrace an international team of authors, all with first hand experience of the issues posed by obesity in the young.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Roula Tzianetas, RDN, BASc (University of British Columbia)
Description: This overview of childhood obesity includes literature from various studies that look at the causes, consequences, and prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.
Purpose: The purpose is to increase awareness of childhood obesity and the complexity of this health concern among health professionals and society. In addition, the authors intend to provide some practical expertise. The objectives are very worthy and this collaboration is greatly needed to disseminate a collection of research on childhood obesity. Although the book provides information on the causes, consequences, and treatment options for childhood obesity, there is limited information on the outcomes of some of the treatment strategies (i.e., how do things work in practice? What strategies work and do not work with children).
Audience: According to the authors, the book is primarily written for health and research workers. It is also suggested that the book will reach a wider group of individuals that the authors have not specified. In my opinion, the book is written at a level for health professionals and I do not believe it is user-friendly for the general population. The majority of the authors have a wide variety of experience in certain areas of childhood obesity.
Features: The book addresses a variety of topics that relate to childhood obesity. It begins with a description of the pathology, epidemiology, and sociological issues surrounding obesity. It provides a synopsis of the possible clinical outcomes of childhood obesity and an overview of the prevention strategies such as diet, activity, and drug therapies. Most interesting is the concluding chapter that focuses on future issues and research opportunities in this area. While the authors' intentions may have been good, I question the use of the drawing on the cover. As health practitioners working with children, we need to have empathy, but I found that the drawing may be interpreted in a negative manner by individuals who live with obesity. I think it continues to perpetuate the stigma associated with obesity and would prefer a comprehensive picture of body images on the cover. Realizing that the book cannot cover every topic extensively, I would like to have seen a review of how some of the practical applications work with children living with obesity. Specifically, reviewing the current research on behavior modification (i.e., why do some children change; what influences their change; what are their experiences; what works and doesn't work with regards to behavior modification and the outcomes of these strategies). Lastly, the use of the term "slimming" is an important issue. The authors need to present their interpretation and use of this term, since it can be misinterpreted. It may conjure up an image of needing to be "thinner" where our goal as health professionals is to encourage healthy weights for children so that they can live healthy lives.
Assessment: This book covers a complex topic taking into consideration a wide variety of determinants of obesity. The synopsis of the material is very useful to health professionals as it provides updated information and raises many questions for future research.

Transformation Through Menopause or Remedies and Rituals

Transformation Through Menopause

Author: Marian Van Eyk McCain

"[This] is by far the most wise and thought provoking book on menopause that I have ever read. It is must reading for every woman who dares to meet the challenges of menopause fully and consciously." Christiane Northrup, M.D. The first holistic perspective on menopause, this book explores how the "change of life" can empower women. Drawing from years of research and clinical work, McCain sees more in menopause than the sum of its psychological and emotional parts: the change is a rite of passage, a prime opportunity for emotional and spiritual growth. McCain explains how Western metaphors for growth are linear, and, by using Eastern concepts of circularity and reflecting upon the real experience of women, she paints a truly alternative picture.

Library Journal

As the baby boom generation ages, more books dealing with aspects of that process are starting to appear. This revised edition of Menopause ( LJ 10/15/83) reflects the most recent findings about the role of hormone replacement therapy in the lives of menopausal women. The authors, a biologist and a physician who advocate its use, explain the physiological changes that occur during this time and offer detailed information about the benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy. They emphasize the prevention of osteoporosis and heart disease. They also offer sound advice about nutrition and exercise for maintaining good health and information about alternatives for those women who do not wish to take hormones. A glossary of terms and an extensive bibliography provide access to the medical literature for further research. Transformation Through Menopause offers women a holistic framework for understanding this physiological process as a rite of passage and using it to create positive change in their lives. McCain, a social worker, encourages women to explore their feelings about menopause using music, art, movement, writing, and meditation. Unlike Women of the 14th Moon: Writing on Menopause, edited by Dena Taylor and Amber Sumrall ( LJ 10/1/91), which is an anthology of poetry and prose, this book provides guided exercises to help with the exploration of personal feelings and the creation of rituals for this transition. Menopause is an excellent addition to the women's health collection for all libraries. Transformation Through Menopause is not a necessary purchase, but it would be a nice supplement for women's studies collections and for libraries where there is interest in holistic health and New Age thought.-- Barbara M. Remedies and Rituals: Folk Medicine in Norway and the New Land

Author: Kathleen Stokker

To cure a fever that begins with chills, write the following on a piece of bread and give it to the patient for eight days, one piece each day, and on the ninth day, burn the last piece: Colameris x, Colameri x, Colamer x, Colame x, Colam x, Cola x, Col x, Co x, and C x. To prevent the huldrefolk from stealing your healthy child and leaving a child with rickets in its place, make three dolls from the child’s clothing to put into the cradle. The huldrefolk will take one of them instead of your child. These and many more fascinating folk-healing rituals were secretly administered by healers, “witches,” and religious caregivers who tended the medical and spiritual needs of rural Norwegians for hundreds of years. In Remedies and Rituals, Kathleen Stokker culls from hundreds of original documents and first-hand accounts to detail the ingredients, customs, and histories behind natural remedies, potions, whispered spells, and the infamous “black books” used for centuries by Norway’s folk healers. Stokker also illuminates the surprising personalities of those who risked imprisonment and persecution to help fellow Norwegians throughout the nineteenth century, as well as the often reluctant healers in the U.S. who continued to treat immigrants living in rural communities beyond the reach of doctors. Dodging harsh criminal laws championed by formally trained doctors, these rebel practitioners drew on ancient written and oral sources to treat everything from burns, broken bones, and whooping cough to difficult labors and emotional stress. Kathleen Stokker is a professor of Norwegian at Luther College in Decorah,Iowa. Recipient of Norway’s prestigious St. Olav Medal in 2006, she is the author of Keeping Christmas: Yuletide Traditions in Norway and the New Land (MHS Press).

Train Go Sorry or 30 Minutes a Day to a Healthy Heart

Train Go Sorry: Inside a Deaf World

Author: Leah Hager Cohen

This portrait of New York's Lafayette School for the Deaf is not just a work of journalism. It is also a memoir, since Leah Hager Cohen grew up on the school's campus and her father is its superintendent. As a hearing person raised among the deaf, Cohen appreciates both the intimate textures of that silent world and the gulf that separates it from our own.

Publishers Weekly

Combining memoir and reportage, Cohen provides a sensitive, intimate portrait of a New York City school for the deaf and the issues facing the deaf community. Cohen is not deaf, but her father heads the Lexington School, and she grew up there. She tracks the progress of two students: Sofia, a Russian immigrant bravely learning a second sign language and a new American world; and ghetto-raised James, who finds stability after moving into the school dormitory. Cohen analyzes the fierce debates over mainstreaming the deaf, the value of oralism and whether new cochlear implants rob the deaf of their culture. She tenderly recalls her deaf grandparents, probes her father's dilemmas, reports on her frustrated romance with a deaf man and her work as an interpreter in a program for deaf adults at the City University of New York. She portrays sign language with wonderfully tactile prose--the word ``silence,'' for example, is signed with ``austere arcs.'' If Cohen's narrative is disjointed, her commitment and her descriptive gifts make her book memorable. (Feb.)

Library Journal

The history of the Lexington School for the Deaf, the oldest school of its kind in the nation, comes alive with Cohen's vivid descriptions of its students and administrators. The author, who grew up at the school, follows the real-life events of Sofia, a Russian immigrant, and James, a member of a poor family in the Bronx, as well as members of her own family both past and present who are intimately associated with the school. Cohen takes special pride in representing the views of the deaf community--which are sometimes strongly divided--in such issues as American Sign Language (ASL) vs. oralism, hearing aids vs. cochlear implants, and mainstreaming vs. special education. The author's lively narrative includes numerous conversations translated from ASL. This is a one-of-a-kind book for both young and old readers. Essential for special education collections.-- Arla Lindgren, St. John's Univ., New York

School Library Journal

YA-Cohen draws upon her experiences as the hearing grandchild of deaf immigrants to combine personal stories of hearing-impaired individuals with related aspects of deaf culture. Using her first home and her father's place of employment, the Lexington School for the Deaf in New York City, to connect characters and experiences, she shares tales of activities familiar to young adults-boring classes, the school play, selling ads for the yearbook, graduation. The only difference for these students is that they cannot hear and cannot speak the language of the hearing world. Through Cohen, readers share in the challenges, frustrations, fears, triumphs, and joys of achievement not only of these young people, but, through historical vignettes, of her grandparents as well. This perspective allows readers to determine how (or if) life has changed for the deaf in America. A careful reading of Train Go Sorry provides exposure to the urban poor and our country's many immigrants (both past and present), making this a resource suitable for sociology or history students interested in viewing the American melting pot through the eyes of a group of people with a silent past.- Janis Ansell, Tidewater Association Hearing Impaired Children (TAHIC), Virginia Beach, VA

BookList

Leah Hager Cohen personalizes the issues facing the deaf culture by introducing their impact on her own family and the community of the Queens, New York City Lexington School for the Deaf. The characterizations of her hearing father, current superintendent of Lexington, and of her grandfather, a former student, are masterly. Throughout the book, Cohen focuses on two students whose Russian and African American roots exemplify the school's increasingly diverse population. Presenting both sides of such debates as using American Sign Language in the classroom and cochlear implants for children, Cohen truly involves readers in the problems of those she portrays. Her discussions support the existence of special schools for this group to provide for its members' particular communication and social needs. Well organized and beautifully written.

Depression and Bipolar Disorders or Health Through Balance

Depression and Bipolar Disorders: Everything You Need to Know

Author: Virginia Edwards

Depression is a deceptively common illness. At some point in their lives, one out of every five people will struggle with bouts of depression, and nearly twice as many women will be affected as men.

At the outset, depression can seem quite similar to the sadness or low moods that we all feel from time to time. As the illness progresses, however, work life, social life and intimate relationships all suffer. The affected person loses interest in those around him, feels exhausted and hopeless and often considers "giving up."

In Depression and Bipolar Disorders, Dr. Virginia Edwards explores the causes, symptoms and treatment of depressions. Topics include:

  • normal versus abnormal depression
  • unipolar depressive disorders
  • bipolar depressive disorders
  • biological and psychosocial therapies
  • depression in women and the elderly
  • treatment options, including involuntary hospitalization
  • suicide.

This comprehensive examination of depression also features case studies and an extensive resource list.

Health Through Balance: An Introduction to Tibetan Medicine

Author: Yeshi Donden

The best work on Tibetan medicine ever to appear in English.--Dr. Barry Clark

Publishers Weekly

Donden, the Dalai Lama's personal physician for some 20 years, fled to India during the 1959 Chinese invasion of his homeland and founded the Tibetan Medical Center at Dharmsala. There, and in private practice, he has built a reputation for successfully treating Indians of all ranks with a holistic system of medicine derived from ancient Buddhist principles. Although that system, detailed in these accessible Univ. of Virginia lectures, emphasizes the integrative treatment certain Western physicians are rediscovering, its tenets on the preordained spiritual aspects of disease remain foreign to our culture. Nonetheless, Donden intriguingly fits together parts of the complex puzzle called health. (July)

Stories of Sickness

Author: Howard Brody

Our personalities and our identities are intimately bound up with the stories that we tell to organize and to make sense of our lives. To understand the human meaning of illness, we therefore must turn to the stories we tell about illness, suffering, and medical care. Stories of Sickness explores the many dimensions of what illness means to the sufferers and to those around them, drawing on depictions of illness in great works of literature and in non-fiction accounts. The exploration is primarily philosophical but incorporates approaches from literature and from the medical social sciences. When it was first published in 1987, Stories of Sickness helped to inaugurate a renewed interest in the importance of narrative studies in health care. For the Second Edition the text has been thoroughly revised and significantly expanded. Four almost entirely new chapters have been added on the nature, complexities, and rigor of narrative ethics and how it is carried out. There is also an additional chapter on maladaptive ways of being sick that deals in greater depth with disability issues. Health care professionals, students of medicine and bioethics, and ordinary people coping with illness, no less than scholars in the health care humanities and social sciences, will find much of value in this volume.
Unique Features:
*Philosophically sophisticated yet clearly written and easily accessible
*Interdisciplinary approach--combines philosophy, literature, health care, social sciences
*Contains many fascinating stories and vignettes of illness drawn from both fiction and nonfiction
*A new and comprehensive overview of the "hot topic" of narrative ethics in medicineand health care

30 Minute Fitness Solution or Coping with Depression in Young People

30-Minute Fitness Solution: A Four-Step Plan for Women of All Ages

Author: JoAnn E Manson

Just 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise—even walking—can save your life. This is the powerful message that Dr. JoAnn Manson—of the lead investigators of both the Women's Health Initiative and the Nurses' Health Study—and her coauthor Patricia Amend want to send to American women.

Regardless of the barriers you may face—too busy, too tired, too "down," or too old—with this four-step practical plan you'll find the excuses falling away and a happier, healthier self emerging. This book offers not only state-of-the-art information from recent medical research but step-by-step instructions on how to get started and maintain a physically active lifestyle. The authors will help you choose a "core" activity that doesn't disrupt your daily life. Then they will show you how to measure your fitness level at the start, how to monitor your progress over time, and how to reward yourself for your efforts. These four simple steps to fitness will work no matter who you are—25 or 75, harried mother or overworked professional (or both), in good health or living with a chronic disease.

The authors have included a clearly illustrated program of stretching and strength-training exercises; sensible activities for women with health concerns; an intelligent weight-loss plan; guidelines for selecting home exercise equipment and choosing a health club; and much more. With over 100 illustrations, questionnaires, and checklists, this book has everything you need to feel good, look better, and live longer, starting today—it's all just 30 minutes away.

Library Journal

Although studies have shown that just 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days of the week and two strength-training sessions per week provide both physical and psychological benefits, many women do not make time to exercise. Here, Manson, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Amend, a fitness writer, present four steps that even the busiest women can follow to make exercise an enjoyable, daily habit: "Plan Your Active Lifestyle," "Proceed with Your Exercise Program," "Record Your Progress," and "Reward Your Efforts." An inspirational quote begins each chapter, and there are many boxes/sidebars featuring questionnaires, record-keeping logs, and other helpful information throughout. "Points To Remember" sections close each chapter. One hopes that the drawings accompanying the sample strength-training workouts will be reviewed and corrected in the finished copy (for example, one depicts a woman stepping up onto a folding chair even though the written instructions specify an adjustable step or bench). Although well written and straightforward, this book doesn't break any new ground. An optional choice for larger collections. Samantha J. Gust, Niagara Univ. Lib., NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Supportive Care for the Renal Patient or Breast Cancer

Supportive Care for the Renal Patient(Supportive Care Series)

Author: E Joanna Chambers

This book provides a comprehensive, evidence-based overview of supportive care for the nephrology patient. An international group of contributors emphasize the continuum of palliative care from the time of diagnosis through to end-of-life care and the issues surrounding withdrawal of dialysis. The book addresses the psychological impact of the disease, the importance of involving the patient in making decisions about their care, ethical considerations, the role of the family and the multidisciplinary team.
This book will be of particular interest to palliative medicine and pain consultants; nephrologists; who increasingly need to know more about palliative care; nurse practitioners; dialysis nurses, social workers, dieticians, and psychiatric consultants.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Mony Fraer, MD (University of Kentucky College of Medicine)
Description: This book appears to be the first to address not only chronic kidney disease, but also the patient as a whole and as a person with a final goal of improving quality of life. It also emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary team approach in order to achieve this goal.
Purpose: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) suffer from depression, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, and chronic pain, problems that are usually perceived as secondary by the caretakers. This book addresses these problems comprehensively.
Audience: This book is written for nephrologists, nurses, and social workers who take care of CKD patients. The social workers will find useful the chapters on palliative care programs, advanced directives and advance care planning, and support of the home dialysis patients.
Features: Many subjects covered in this book are not formally taught to nephrologists, including initiation and withdrawal of dialysis, end of life care, the time-limited trial of dialysis, evaluation of a request to stop dialysis, and the palliative care option. A special emphasis is placed on the spiritual care and the psychological aspects of renal disease. The chapters are constructed around case scenarios, making the reading more interesting and providing a connection with the problems encountered in real life. Out of all the excellent tables in the book, the ones that I found very helpful were: "Guidelines for the care of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who are in the last days of life in hospital" and the ones that outline the management of dialysis and ESRD-related symptoms.
Assessment: This is a valuable and useful book. It addresses topics not formally taught and often neglected in the nephrology community. The authors are experts in the field. I initially misjudged the book by an apparently unappealing title, but I found it to be extremely interesting and useful. I think it should be included in the core curriculum of every nephrology program.

New interesting book: Oysters or Fondue

Breast Cancer

Author: Michael Baum

The new edition of this popular guide has been updated to include many innovative developments in the primary and secondary prevention of breast cancer. New surgical techniques are described together with the promising results of adjuvant systemic therapy trials, which have demonstrated prolonged survival rates in patients treated during early stages of the disease. New biological insights into the nature of breast cancer are also described. The book retains its relatively simple style and is an ideal resource for patients and their families.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Melody L McKinney, DNS, RN (Indiana State University)
Description: As the care management of breast cancer patients is being assumed more often by general practitioners, and patients are taking a more active role, easily accessible high-quality informational resources are needed to facilitate decision-making. This third edition handbook of "fast facts" on breast cancer contains practical advice on topics such as cancer risk education, diagnosis and treatment of primary cancer, rehabilitation, and care of patients with advanced disease. Written by two world experts on breast cancer, this expanded and updated edition also includes information on breast cancer genetics, hormone replacement therapy, and findings from recent major clinical trials.
Purpose: According to the authors, the book is designed to provide cancer care practitioners rapid access to information for helping patients sort out the "facts" from "fancies and fallacies" when weighing the risks and benefits of various treatment options.
Audience: The targeted audience is cancer care clinicians, including clinical nurse specialists.
Features: The book includes a brief introduction and seven chapters addressing a broad range of issues related to cancer epidemiology, perception of risk, pathophysiology, diagnosis, primary tumor control, adjuvant therapy, HRT, follow-up and rehabilitation, management of advanced cancer, clinical trials, and future trends. Numerous colorful tables and figures enhance the presentation of content. Each chapter ends with highlighted lists of key points and references. An index and a page of useful addresses for resources in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia are also provided.
Assessment: This well-referenced, well-indexed handbook provides succinct, current, and practical information on breast cancer and its management. The expertise of two world authorities on breast cancer is used to achieve the goal of presenting cutting-edge information related to advances in the understanding of cancer, its causes and treatment. The content is broad in scope, pertinent, and well-written and should achieve the authors' goal of providing rapid access to information that will facilitate the complex task of interpreting new data and treatments as clinicians guide patients in weighing the risks and benefits of various treatment options and making informed decisions.

Tibetan Medicinal Plants or Introduction to Toxicology and Food

Tibetan Medicinal Plants

Author: Christa Kletter

The main part of this volume encompasses 60 monographs, each having a Tibetan plant name as its title. This collection provides a comprehensive overview of all plant types, thus making it easier for the reader to grasp the Tibetan concept. Each monograph consists of several chapters. These chapters address different topics related either to the Tibetan or the Western approach. Most of the monographs contain a description of the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the used plant parts, and anatomical features of 76 plants are provided. Each monograph contains a chapter in which an overview of the known chemical constituents and pharmacological properties of each plant is given as well as a chapter on their use in Tibetan medicine. In contrast to other publications on Tibetan medicine, where translations of the Tibetan terms are given in other languages, this book treats the Tibetan word as a technical term, keeps the Tibetan term and tries to explain its meaning. This treatment lessens confusion byreducing the number of translations with which the reader has to deal.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Michael Gabay, PharmD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy)
Description: This is an in-depth review of 59 plants used by practitioners of Tibetan medicine. The book is written from a scientific, but yet very Eastern medicinal, perspective. Highlights of the book include color illustrations of the various plants and a glossary of Tibetan medical terms. The glossary is very useful for understanding the purposes of these plants in treating or preventing diseases.
Purpose: The main purpose is to contribute to the existing knowledge of Tibetan medicinal plants and the preservation of traditional Tibetan medicine, through both traditional Tibetan and Western approaches to medicine. Since there is little published data available about Tibetan medicinal plants in such a format, I believe the objectives are worthy. The authors meet the objectives, but it seems to me that there is a tendency to accentuate the Tibetan medicinal approach throughout the book. The combination of both approaches is difficult to do as mentioned by the authors.
Audience: It is hard to pinpoint a specific audience for this book beyond those who work specifically with Tibetan medicinal plants in practice or researchers who may wish to know about the chemistry and pharmacology of these plants. The authors seem to be quite credible.
Features: The Tibetan medicinal herbs are covered in a monograph format. Sections within each monograph include plant classification, distribution, chemistry, pharmacology, and use in Tibetan medicine. The authors have obviously done a great deal of background research to find references for the information contained in the book. Most of the references would be unretrievable for most researchers, however. The information is very scientific and descriptions of the use in Tibetan medicine of the plants forces the Western medicine practitioner to consistently refer to the glossary for definitions of disease states. No mentions are made of interactions with prescription medications or possible safety concerns regarding use. Most of the Tibetan medicinal plants lack any solid clinical data for efficacy or safety.
Assessment: This book is needed. In general, very little information is available regarding Tibetan medicinal plants even in contemporary natural product books. The book does give researchers and practitioners basic scientific information about each plant and the basis for their use in Tibetan medicine, but does not relate well how these uses fit into Western medicine applications. For general healthcare practitioners, this book probably would not be that useful. Information is not applicable to most practice settings, is not patient-focused, and contains little to no efficacy and safety data regarding these plants. However, I don't believe these were specifically the goals of the authors.

Booknews

Tibetan doctors and Austrian researchers in botany and pharmacognosy report the findings of a study sparked to document plants used in Tibetan medicine. After reviewing Tibetan medicine and the habitats of Tibetan medicinal plants, they detail 60 plants or groups of plants with information on the Tibetan plant classification, botanical findings, plant material, description, distribution, ecology, taxonomy, variability, conservation. Then they consider the macroscopic and microscopic characters, chemistry, and pharmacology of the drug derived from the plant. Included are 77 pages of color plates, and a glossary of Tibetan medical terms. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Kristine N Clark, MS, RCEP (North Carolina State)
Description: This handbook provides a condensed review of the impact of nutrition on physical performance. The information is complemented by expert commentary on important questions/topics as well as case studies of various athletes.
Purpose: This book is intended to provide an up-to-date handbook on sports nutrition for coaches, sports professionals, and athletes. Coaches and athletes alike continue to look for strategies to create an edge over other athletes. The market of supplements and ergogenic aids continues to grow. This book focuses on sound nutrition strategies, based on the research, to enhance an athlete's physical performance.
Audience: Although the tone of the book indicates it is directed toward an audience working with athletes, such as coaches, trainers, and dieticians, it is written at a level that would be appropriate for the athletes themselves. However, the expert commentary is written at a level more appropriate for the professionals working with athletes.
Features: This book covers three main areas: preparing the athlete for competition, nutrition for the athlete during competition, and practical recommendations for appropriate eating strategies in various situations. The case studies, relating to topics throughout the book, provide a practical example of athletes seeking professional advice on how to improve their diet to improve their performance. The expert comments provide more detailed information on specific topics relating to the chapter, but most of the information in these comments would have been more appropriate and useful within the chapter itself.
Assessment: This book is a great resource for anyone working with athletes. It is a quick reference for a summary of the latest research in the area of sports nutrition and it provides practical recommendations for the sports professional working with athletes. The greatest strength of this book lies in the one or two case studies that accompany almost every chapter.
