Dr. Gavin's Health Guide for African Americans: How to Keep Yourself and Children Well

Author: James R Gavin

Dr. James Gavin covers wellness and the tools to achieve it. He discusses health topics of particular concern to the African American population: obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. His intergenerational, family-centered approach to health is the prescription for breaking the alarming cycle of lifestyle-caused diseases, which are now striking children, too. Key features:

  • Focus on prevention of disease
  • Tool kits for better health

Library Journal

Gavin (president, Morehouse Coll. Sch. of Medicine) provides a thorough and thoughtful examination of the ways in which African Americans can control and improve their health. Unlike comparable books, Gavin's title is not preachy or full of colloquialisms; instead, it provides straight talk peppered with encouragement. The text recalls Rovenia Brock's Dr. Ro's Ten Secrets to Livin' Healthy in that it advocates eating healthier and making small, incremental lifestyle changes while also addressing ailments specific to the African American community. However, Brock is a nutritionist, and she pays more attention to her specialty, even offering an eating plan and recipes. Meanwhile, Gavin delves more deeply into the details of various ailments (e.g., diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure) and offers specific tips, tools, and healthy habits to address them. He also stresses that children should develop good eating and lifestyle habits early. Finally, at the end of every chapter, Gavin provides a print and Internet resource list. Although targeted to African Americans, this book will assist anyone looking to improve his or her health. Recommended for African American and consumer health collections.-Nicole A. Ready Made Democracy or Program Theory Driven Evaluation Science

Ready-Made Democracy: A History of Men's Dress in the American Republic 1760-1860

Author: Michael Zakim

Ready-Made Democracy explores the history of men's dress in America to consider how capitalism and democracy emerged at the center of American life during the century between the Revolution and the Civil War. Michael Zakim demonstrates how clothing initially attained a significant place in the American political imagination on the eve of Independence. At a time when household production was a popular expression of civic virtue, homespun clothing was widely regarded as a reflection of America's most cherished republican values: simplicity, industriousness, frugality, and independence.
By the early nineteenth century, homespun began to disappear from the American material landscape. Exhortations of industry and modesty, however, remained a common fixture of public life. In fact, they found expression in the form of the business suit. Here, Zakim traces the evolution of homespun clothing into its ostensible opposite—the woolen coats, vests, and pantaloons that were "ready-made" for sale and wear across the country. In doing so, he demonstrates how traditional notions of work and property actually helped give birth to the modern industrial order. For Zakim, the history of men's dress in America mirrored this transformation of the nation's social and material landscape: profit-seeking in newly expanded markets, organizing a waged labor system in the city, shopping at "single-prices," and standardizing a business persona.
In illuminating the critical links between politics, economics, and fashion in antebellum America, Ready-Made Democracy will prove essential to anyone interested in the history of the United States and in the creation of modern culture ingeneral.

Library Journal

Examining the American Colonial and early republican experience, Zakim (history, Tel Aviv Univ.) shows us how clothing can make history. During the early Industrial Revolution, England needed to foster its nascent textile business; it kept textile technology secret and regulated trade so as to import raw materials cheaply from its colonies and sell back to them the finished goods-bolts of finely made and costly fabrics. Colonial Americans chafed under this restrictive regime, for they had to sell cheap and buy dear-a recipe for penury, if not poverty. Hence, America resisted, and this resistance as well as others led to its War of Independence. The American Colonies at first sent emissaries to plead with Parliament for relief, but when none came, they sent spies to steal industrial secrets. Colonial governments and public media, moreover, made it a virtue to refuse English goods and rely on homemade products-in this instance homespun fabrics. Homespun dress came to mark the self-reliant American patriot. A rewriting of Zakim's doctoral dissertation at Columbia University, this book is not a casual read but scholarly, detailed, and thoroughly annotated. Recommended for academic libraries and public libraries with specialty collections in industrial or fashion history.-James F. DeRoche, Alexandria, VA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Program Theory-Driven Evaluation Science: Strategies and Applications

Author: Stewart I Donaldson

Program Theory-Driven Evaluation Science fills the gap between 21st century literature on evaluation and what is happening in practice. It features detailed examples of how evaluations actually unfold in practice to develop people, programs, and organizations. Commonly accepted strategies for practicing evaluation are outlined, followed by comprehensive accounts of how those strategies have played out in the face of the complexities and challenges of "real world" settings. In so doing, the book illustrates the authentic challenges of implementing an evaluation approach in practice.

Author Stewart Donaldson provides a state-of-the-art treatment of the practice of program theory-driven evaluation science. Each case follows a three-step model: developing program impact theory; formulating and prioritizing evaluation questions; and answering evaluation questions. Initial chapters discuss the emergence of program theory-driven evaluation science and specific strategies for carrying out each of the three steps. Succeeding chapters address recent applications and practical implications of evaluation science. The challenges and lessons learned from the cases are then reviewed.

This volume is of significant value to evaluation practitioners, professors and trainers of evaluation, evaluation researchers, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and serves as a text for courses in evaluation and applied research methods. It is also of great interest to those interested in the connections between work and health, career development, human service organizations, and organizational improvement and effectiveness.

Behavioral Treatment for Substance Abuse in Schizophrenia or Insight in Psychiatry

Behavioral Treatment for Substance Abuse in Schizophrenia (BTSAS)

Author: Alan S Bellack

The last few years have seen an increasing awareness among the mental health community to the unique situations of the person suffering simultaneously from mental health disorders and substance abuse addiction. Complementing this rise in attention has been a realization of the unique challenges faced by mental health professionals engaged in the treatment of these clients, and a startling acknowledgement of the gap in the existing literature on the topic. There is currently no available treatment manual that includes specific training on how to treat this difficult population, following guidelines and practical instructions based on treatment practices already employed by the authors. This treatment manual will fill an important gap in the literature by addressing the specific challenges faced by the clinician treating individuals with co-occurring schizophrenia and substance abuse disorders.

The unique strength of the proposed volume is its close adherence to a treatment plan proven successful byempirical research and now being made available for the practicing clinician. The book is designed as a manual for mental health professionals, and follows a program which incorporates various treatment components, from motivational interviewing, urinalysis contingency, and social skills training to education and coping skills, problem solving and relapse prevention, and finally termination. Guidelines are clearly established for these treatment modes, utilizing case examples and fictional situations to allow the reader to profit more directly from the lessons in the text. The book follows a treatment outline that will allow the clinician to pattern a series of therapy sessionsafter the suggested timeframe found within the text. Additionally, the format and flow of individual sessions is carefully considered and discussed, allowing the clinician a model from which to base a treatment plan.

Insight in Psychiatry

Author: Ivana Markova

Despite considerable research examining insight in patients with psychoses, non-psychotic disorders and chronic organic brain syndromes, results are inconclusive and insight remains a source of some mystification. To what extent can patients understand disorders which affect their mental function? Does insight bear a prognostic value? Is impaired insight determined by the illness or are other factors of equal importance? Ivana S. Marková examines the problems involved in studying insight in patients with mental illness in order to provide a clearer understanding of the factors that determine its clinical manifestation.

A Surgical Temptation or The Body of Frankensteins Monster

A Surgical Temptation: The Demonization of the Foreskin and the Rise of Circumcision in Britain

Author: Robert Darby

In the eighteenth century, the Western world viewed circumcision as an embarrassing disfigurement peculiar to Jews. A century later, British doctors urged parents to circumcise their sons as a routine precaution against every imaginable sexual dysfunction, from syphilis and phimosis to masturbation and bed-wetting. Thirty years later the procedure again came under hostile scrutiny, culminating in its disappearance during the 1960s.

Why Britain adopted a practice it had traditionally abhorred and then abandoned it after only two generations is the subject of A Surgical Temptation. Robert Darby reveals that circumcision has always been related to the question of how to control male sexuality. This study explores the process by which the male genitals, and the foreskin especially, were pathologized, while offering glimpses into the lives of such figures as James Boswell, John Maynard Keynes, and W. H. Auden. Examining the development of knowledge about genital anatomy, concepts of health, sexual morality, the rise of the medical profession, and the nature of disease, Darby shows how these factors transformed attitudes toward the male body and its management and played a vital role in the emergence of modern medicine.

An erudite, lively, and sometimes combative investigation of a formative period in medical history, A Surgical Temptation will inform and engage any reader with an interest in the history of medicine, gender, sexuality, the practice of circumcision in the world today, and the ways in which culture fashions the human body.

The Body of Frankenstein's Monster: Essays in Myth and Medicine

Author: Cecil Helman

Frankenstein. Werewolves. Dracula. These images aren't just imaginary creatures -- they're also powerful symbols of the body. The body can be thought of as a machine made up of parts like Frankenstein's monster, or as a creature ruled by animalistic urges, or as an entity that's vulnerable to infection from a diseased fiend. In "The Body of Frankenstein's Monster," Cecil Helman, M.D., expands our view of our bodies by exploring its cultural and artistic representations.

Publishers Weekly

These inquisitive essays are a strong antidote to modern medicine's tendency to treat the body as a machine. A physician, anthropologist and folklorist based in London, Helman undertakes poetic, cross-disciplinary forays for high-tech medicine's connections to myth, magic and metaphor. He relates the placebo effect to mesmerism, interprets the Frankenstein story as a harbinger of transplant surgery and reads an X-ray image as a white-branched Tree of Life. From medical models of premenstrual tension in which women are slaves of a cyclical moon, he moves on to consider moonstruck werewolves, Sasquatch, Yeti and women's long, flowing hair as a symbol of animality. Germ imagery in daily language (``an epidemic of muggings'') leads him to unravel a ``germistic way of thinking,'' which blames our misfortunes on external forces. A medically informed social critic, Helman sees the watch and the clock as central icons of a civilization in which ambitious ``type A personalities'' are rewarded for their ruthless behavior. (May)

Kirkus Reviews

Helman—professor of medicine (University College, London), family physician, and cultural historian—draws on his wide-ranging interests to offer a vivid, personable, and insightful exploration of physiology and fiction—of the interaction of the objective functioning of the human body and the subjective experience of it, as well as of the political analogues and social metaphors it inspires in both historic and contemporary terms. One version of the body, Frankenstein's monster, is, Helman says, an assemblage of otherwise alien parts existing in a balance of power, a "somatic democracy" disrupted occasionally by "aliens" such as transplants or "invaded" by germs (formerly demons), to which the poor, the weak, and the "morally inept" are particularly susceptible. This version of the body, the author explains, is more political than another version, "The Premenstrual Werewolf," which emphasizes the moral dimension of the body, destroyed by the release of repressed animal forces—contagious ones—expressed in a disease such as AIDS. At another extreme, in "The Medusa Machine," Helman depicts the body as a machine, an extension of TV and the computer, imperfectly projected in anthropomorphic robots. The last essay, "A Time of the Heart," traces the Type-A personality—aggressive, ambitious, impatient: the "Numerical Man" dominated by time, money, and statistics, acting out the values of the postindustrial society, a "moral marionette" whose success will cause his heart to fail. Helman's illustrations are especially apt and moving: an old man dies, the sitcom he was watching still reflected in his eyes, his dentures on the floor next to him, grinning backat the laughing figures. Or Helman reflects on the psychological damage to Isaac, the phobia he may have acquired against fathers, knives, rams, his post-traumatic syndrome. But the book is held together primarily by Helman's charm; it has the imperfect coherence of Frankenstein's monster, with which he is so fascinated. With its sweep, perception, originality, and felicitous use of language—an artistic and intellectual achievement.

Long Tomorrow or Vaccination

Long Tomorrow: How Advances in Evolutionary Biology Can Help Us Postpone Aging

Author: Michael R Ros

The conquest of aging is now within our grasp. It hasn't arrived yet, writes Michael R. Rose, but a scientific juggernaut has started rolling and is picking up speed. A long tomorrow is coming.
In The Long Tomorrow, Rose offers us a delightfully written account of the modern science of aging, spiced with intriguing stories of his own career and leavened with the author's engaging sense of humor and rare ability to make contemporary research understandable to nonscientists. The book ranges from Rose's first experiments while a graduate student--counting a million fruit fly eggs, which took 3,000 hours over the course of a year--to some of his key scientific discoveries. We see how some of his earliest experiments helped demonstrate that "the force of natural selection" was key to understanding the aging process--a major breakthrough. Rose describes how he created the well-known Methuselah Flies, fruit flies that live far longer than average. Equally important, Rose surveys the entire field, offering colorful portraits of many leading scientists and shedding light on research findings from around the world. We learn that rodents given fifteen to forty percent fewer calories live about that much longer, and that volunteers in Biosphere II, who lived on reduced caloric intake for two years, all had improved vital signs. Perhaps most interesting, we discover that aging hits a plateau and stops.
Popular accounts of Rose's work have appeared in The New Yorker, Time magazine, and Scientific American, but The Long Tomorrow is the first full account of this exciting new science written for the general reader.
"Among his peers, Rose is considered a brilliantly innovative scientist, who has almost single-handedly brought the evolutionary theory of aging from an abstract notion to one of the most exciting topics in science."--Malcolm Gladwell, The New Yorker

"Engaging and illuminating.... Rose is successful both in capturing the imagination of young people with little exposure to formal science and in convincing advanced researchers in other fields that understanding evolutionary biology is important to their science and to their careers. This is a significant achievement."--American Scientist
"Well-written and entertaining.... Rose's innovative studies of the past 25 years have revealed much about the influence of natural selection on aging and have opened up several intriguing possibilities for extending human lives. Here he relates how many of his most significant discoveries were made, interlacing lucid explanations of their significance with interesting accounts of how his own sometimes difficult life experiences influenced his research, and frankly discusses his failures and successes."--Library Journal
"In this hugely enjoyable book, Rose provides a thorough but never too technical survey of one of the most instructive strands of the biology of aging--manipulating the rate of aging by accelerating evolution. If his attempt to extend his studies to mice had succeeded, we might be much closer now to extending human lifespan."--Aubrey de Grey
"Michael Rose is more qualified than anyone currently working in the field of aging to write about the evolutionary development of aging in biological organisms, and he presents us here with a clear, easy-to-digest overview of the field. We meet the leaders and the busy-bee scientists; the believers and the nay-sayers. His final summary of the possibilities for postponing human aging is one of the most accurate and believable to appear in recent years. But most of all, Rose gives us a sense of what it is like to be a living, working scientist. Far and away one of the best-rounded, deeply satisfying accounts of a scientist and his work I have read. Warts and all!" --William R. Clark, University of California, Los Angeles, and author of Sex and the Origins of Death and A Means to an End
"Michael Rose has developed novel and important views on the future of human longevity that draw from his pioneering laboratory experiments and his deep understanding of evolutionary biology. Rose's leads his readers on a fascinating journey from fly cages to the Biosphere, and beckons to the future which may not be so far ahead." --Caleb E. Finch, ARCO/ Keischnick Professor of Gerontology and Biological Science, Andrus Gerontology Center, University of Southern California, and author of Chance, Development and Aging
"Rose is not only an original scientist--he was among the first to demonstrate the extraordinary plasticity of aging in fruit flies after just a dozen generations of selective breeding--he is also a superb writer, and this book can be understood by anyone who ever took high school biology. But even those of us who are professional scientists will enjoy reading this book because of the global perspective he provides on the whole field of gerontology. By carefully reviewing his decades-long career with all the blind alleys that are commonplace for anyone who pioneers a new field, Rose gives us this perspective." --L. Stephen Coles, M.D., Ph.D., Co-Founder, Los Angeles Gerontology Research Group, and Stem-Cell Researcher at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine

Publishers Weekly

Rose, an authority on gerontology, uses evolutionary biology to frame the problem of aging, contrasting the drive to reproduce in youth with the ability to survive into old age. In short, according to his research, the Victorians were right: sex is death. The evolutionary pressure of reproducing at an early age seems to have the side effect of causing early aging. Rose's explanation of his theory is so clear, it seems ridiculous that anyone could have conceived of another explanation. But whether this theory will ever be used to slow down human aging is unclear. Rose relates the progress of aging research in an autobiographical format. So, interspersed with experiments on long-lived fruit flies, there are almost voyeuristic glimpses into Rose's own life: the suicide of his brother, the murder of his brother-in-law, the tragic end of his first marriage. The result is a book that flops between the evocative stories of one man's life in science and the somewhat drier explanation of that science. Nevertheless, Rose gives a balanced evaluation of the study of aging and sheds a little more light on one of biology's greatest mysteries. Agent, Faith Hamlin. (Sept.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

As a graduate student, Rose (evolutionary biology, Univ. of California, Irvine) was reluctantly steered into research on the evolution of aging. After some early difficulties, he successfully bred "Methuselah" fruit flies with exceptionally long life spans and became hooked. Rose's innovative studies of the past 25 years have revealed much about the influence of natural selection on aging and have opened up several intriguing possibilities for extending human lives. Here he relates how many of his most significant discoveries were made, interlacing lucid explanations of their significance with interesting accounts of how his own sometimes difficult life experiences influenced his research, and frankly discusses his failures and successes. Rose believes that we are on the verge of being able to extend the human life span significantly, not through a process of breeding superpeople but by using our improved knowledge of evolutionary genetics to develop new biotechnologies that may be able to cure or at least postpone many late-life ailments. Although intended for lay readers, this well-written and entertaining book should also appeal to scholars; recommended for both academic and public libraries.-Marit S. Reconnecting with Nature or The Ultimate Storm Survival Handbook

Reconnecting with Nature: Finding Wellness through Restoring Your Bond with the Earth

Author: Michael J Cohen

Michael Cohen's Reconnecting With Nature is about finding wellness through restoring our bond with the Earth. Most of us have been conditioned to ignore nearly fifty sensitivities that connect us to the natural world. This separation stress contributes to many of our environmental and personal problems. Through the chapters and activities of Reconnecting With Nature, Dr. Cohen suggests ways to use nature's wisdom to re-awaken dormant sensitivities, rebuild our spiritual connection with the Earth and enhance our personal well-being. Reconnecting With Nature is highly rewarding reading for anyone with an interest in nature and how nature can inspire us and heal us, trapped as we most often are, in the spiritual desert of an urban wilderness with its steel canyons, glass walls, asphalt roads, concrete sidewalks, every present noise, invasive crowds, and the multiple pollutions of mind and body.

Whats Normal or Healing from within with CHI Nei Tsang

What's Normal?: An Anthology: Narratives of Mental and Emotional Disorders

Author: Carol C Donley

What's Normal?, examines the issues of "abnormalities" in mental health, intelligence, and sexual behavior.

The first section of What's Normal? Presents a wide-ranging collection of essays and articles written by renowned clinicians who address clinical, ethical, and social issues related to mental illness and disorders. The second section uses fiction, poetry, and drama to portray mental and behavioral abnormalities, sometimes from "inside" the perspective of the deviant and sometimes from the experiences of family, friends, and other engaged observers. Excerpts that examine the treatment of mental health, intelligence, and sexual conduct are cited form such literary works as Equus, Of Mice and Men, Like Water for Chocolate, and Sula.

The Literature and Medicine Series is extended to encourage those working or living with others outside the norms to be more inclusive and understanding. What's Normal? is an insightful and valuable addition to this series.

Living Longer Depression Free or The Autism Book

Living Longer Depression Free: A Family Guide to Recognizing, Treating, and Preventing Depression in Later Life

Author: Mark D Miller

Depression affects people of all ages, but is both more common and more serious for those over sixty. As many as half of all nursing home residents have depression, as do up to 40 percent of those who visit primary care clinics. Late-life depression is a disease with unique risk factors. Health problems, physical limitations, the loss of loved ones, and fears about financial issues all contribute to an increased incidence of depression, which, despite its prevalence, is not a normal part of the aging process. It can intensify existing medical conditions such as chronic pain and is far more likely to lead to suicide than does depression in younger people. There is good news, however: 80 percent of older people who receive treatment for depression make a complete recovery and enjoy fulfilling lives.

In Living Longer Depression Free, Mark D. Miller, M.D., and Charles F. Reynolds III, M.D., draw on their considerable experience in geriatric psychiatry to help elderly persons, their families, and their physicians accurately diagnose and treat late-life depression. This comprehensive, up-to-date guide begins with a discussion of the different types of depression, their causes, and symptoms. The authors then describe how doctors evaluate depression; present the treatment options available to patients today, including psychotherapy, medication, and alternative treatments; and offer strategies for achieving long-term mental health. Each chapter opens with a list of frequently asked questions and uses case studies to personalize the information provided, and the book closes with a useful list of resources for further information, including hotlines and websites.

Compassionateand accessible, Living Longer Depression Free is an invaluable guide for older people and their families striving to overcome this debilitating disease and prevent its recurrence.

Library Journal

Both geriatric psychiatrists at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Miller and Reynolds here share their 20-plus years' experience of working with older people suffering from depression. As the authors remind readers, the incidence of depression significantly rises with age, and suicide, highly associated with depression, is five times more common in later life. This important, thorough work covers the various forms of and medical reasons for depression and how it's related to Alzheimer's and other diseases; reviews how to evaluate and treat depression, including medication and psychotherapy; and presents numerous strategies for staying free of depression for the long term. The helpful appendix contains hotline numbers of organizations that focus on depression and URLs related to depression and late-life issues. Though several works for health professionals contain similar information, this is the first book to address lay readers. Strongly recommended.-Dale Farris, Groves, TX Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Booknews

Miller and Reynolds (both: psychiatry, U. of Pittsburgh) offer non-professionals a framework within which to understand depression in later life. Though the incidence of depression among seniors is high and growing, they say it is highly treatable, with full recovery in over 80% of elders who receive adequate treatment. Annotation c. Metaphysical Book of Gems and Crystals or Yoga on the Ball

Metaphysical Book of Gems and Crystals

Author: Florence Megemont

NEW AGE / CRYSTALS

“Florence Mégemont’s explorations of the spiritual and therapeutic applications of over seventy different minerals and gemstones are vivid and lively, and they convey a strong sense of the stones as ‘beings’ rather than objects. This book gives strong emphasis to the therapeutic capacities of stones, and this is appropriate because the stones’ agenda is to facilitate human evolution into wholeness and spiritual realization.”
--Robert Simmons, author of The Book of Stones and Moldavite: Starborn Stone of Transformation

Gemstones have been used for both therapeutic and spiritual purposes since the earliest days, in all traditions. Used properly, they can contribute to and accelerate healing through the practice of lithotherapy, which uses gems and minerals to restore enzymatic functions, and they can energize spiritual development. Alternative medicines such as homeopathy have given prominence to the therapeutic character of certain minerals, but the use of gemstones in expanding awareness or establishing a holistic, energetic connection with the stone itself has scarcely been brought forward. In this reclaiming of ancient wisdom, Florence Mégemont explores the many potent and beneficial dimensions of the mineral world.

Over seventy precious and semiprecious stones are inventoried as to their principal deposits, therapeutic applications, and zodiac correspondences. Readers will discover which minerals can relieve specific physical and emotional disorders and which gemstones are indispensable to their spiritual health. The author also explains how to apply the stones to thechakras. Additionally, Mégemont shows how the stones can act preventively, energizing both our health and spiritual resources to a state of balance and attunement.

FLORENCE MÉGEMONT has been practicing lithotherapy since 1995, and she gives lectures and workshops throughout Europe. She is the author in French of two other books on the power of gems and minerals. She lives in southern France.

Alcoholism The Facts or Heartburn Reflux For Dummies

Alcoholism - The Facts

Author: Donald W Goodwin

Alcoholism: The Facts deals with all aspects of the world's number one drug problem. Primarily a book for all those who have alcohol problems and for those who share their lives, it is written in a clear and lively style, and deals with all the social, psychological, and medical aspects of alcohol problems - of which alcoholism is the best-known example. In the decade since the first edition of this book was published there has been an enormous amount of scientific research into what causes some people to suffer from alcohol problems and the best treatments to offer them. Professor Goodwin explains straightforwardly and with minimal technical jargon what the results of this research mean, and how to go about getting help with alcohol problems for yourself, a relative, or friend.

Cindy L. Gilbert

This author presents readers a concise, readable volume covering basic information about this widespread illness. In 17 rather brief chapters, he is able to provide an interesting and even amusing update on alcoholism. "The author's effort here is toward bringing the reader up to date on the newest developments in the study and treatment of alcoholism. "He intends his work for a wide audience. Indeed this is a highly accessible book, largely due to the absence of technical language and the direct writing style. It is easy to imagine either a layperson or a clinician utilizing this book to find basic information about alcoholism. "The author offers his book in four sections: Alcohol, Alcoholism, Understanding Alcoholism, and Treating Alcoholism. Each section contains 4-5 chapters on issues such as the history of alcohol, symptomology of alcoholism, hereditary influences in alcoholism, and Alcoholics Anonymous. The author devotes a chapter to women and alcohol, and while it is brief, he acknowledges the discrepancy between research done on men and that done on women, which is a refreshing change. Furthermore, he debunks some myths about alcohol as well. For example, he reports a series of commonly held beliefs about female alcoholics including that they are known to have been submissive as children and rebellious as adults. He states that if every submissive child who became a rebellious adult drank too much the oceans could not contain enough alcohol to meet the demand. His review of the symptoms of alcoholism is especially concrete. It is written in such as a way as to make it easy for the reader to grasp the state of mind of the alcoholic, as well as the progression ofsymptoms. Unfortunately, while the author makes reference to numerous studies, he does not provide citations for them. Follow-up research would be difficult if one wanted to pursue a study mentioned here. "This book is a succinct summary of what is known about alcoholism at this time. Inevitably, in a book so small, some information has almost certainly been left out. However, the readability and clarity of this volume balance any informational oversights it may contain. This is the third edition of this book, and in light of the fact that the second edition was published in 1995, a third edition was almost certainly due at this time.
